CMS – fancy name for a simple concept that saves you money
The morning was shining and full of promises. John unlocked the door of his office and looked at his desk. He was proud of his business. Everything looked like it would be another great day for him and then it happened… The phone rang and a very excited person tried to place an order for a product. There is nothing wrong with this, except the price; it was less than half of what it was supposed to be. John found out that the customer saw the price on his website! He opened the browser and to his horror he saw most of the products had the wrong prices displayed. The next second he called the company in charge with maintaining his web site. After all, he paid them a lot of money. Unfortunately, the guy who had access to his web pages was sick and had called off for the next three days. Nobody else could update his web site. And then, customers started to call to place their orders, happy with the “great prices” they saw on his website. And the phone kept ringing and ringing…
How do you like this story? It’s not totally made up. There are many “Johns” out there having hard times with their website because of the costs involved in maintaining and updating information on it and fixing things that can go wrong now and then. A simple common sense rule says that if something can go wrong (with your website), it will! My question is: are you prepared to deal with this? And how much does it cost you?
Fortunately there is a bright side!. It’s called “Content Management System (CMS)” and the fancy name stands for a simple and powerful concept: have your website build on a solution that not only incorporates a database and a programming language, but also allows you to manage the content of the website in real time. The real power of a “CMS” system is its logical and straightforward administrator interface and the fact that it allows you to manage the content of the web pages without the need to learn all that “html stuff.” If you understand Microsoft Word, you can work with this! You can define users and restrict or grant access to different areas of the website. This way, Mike, from the sales department can update their web pages and Nick from the customer service would be able to change the phone numbers on the website. And the good news is: you don’t have to pay a dime to another company to update your website.
Now, let the phone ring with confidence, nothing wrong is going to happen…
See you next time.
